Component 4. Section A. Evaluation of Production Skills Development

Section A: Evaluation of production skills development (50 marks)

There will be a two-part question in this section.

Part (a) will require candidates to focus the discussion of their own skills development on to one or two specific production practices from the list below:

  • use of digital technology
  • creativity
  • research and planning
  • using conventions from real media texts.

Part (b) will require candidates to select one of their own productions and evaluate it in relation to a media concept from the list below:

    • genre
    • narrative
    • representation
    • audience
    • media language.

This component assesses the following objectives:

AO1: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of media concepts, contexts and critical debates, using terminology appropriately.

AO2: Apply knowledge and understanding to show how meanings are created when analysing media products and when evaluating their own practical work.

 

Guidelines for exam:

1(a): you will refer to your work for the Foundation Portfolio and Advanced Portfolio. Additionally, you may make reference to other media production work but this is strictly optional.

1(b): You will need to choose one production from either Foundation Portfolio or Advanced Portfolio. You are asked to relate a media production to a theoretical concept and you are at liberty to either apply the concept to your production or explain how the concept is not useful in relation to your production.

 

EXAMPLES OF QUESTIONS

Q1a – Research and planning/creativity

Describe how you developed research and planning skills for media production and evaluate how these skills contributed to creative decision making. Refer to a range of examples in your answer to show how these skills developed over time (25 marks)

Q1a – Digital technology/creativity

Describe how you developed your skills in the use of digital technology for media production and evaluate how these skills contributed to creative decision making. Refer to a range of examples in your answer to show how these skills developed over time (25 marks)

Q1a – Conventions

Explain how your understanding of the conventions of existing media media influenced the way you created your own media products. Refer to a range of examples in your answer to show how these skills developed over time (25 marks)

Q1a – Creativity

Describe how you have used creativity to develop your skills as a media practitioner. Refer to a range of examples in your answer to show how these skills developed over time (25 marks)
